Narcissistic Greed is governed by selfish gain; it is directly antithetical to the scriptural exhortation and prayer, “Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain” (Psalm 119:36). After a brief and ugly season of being targeted by such narcissistic greed, you can walk away feeling disenchanted with those who profess Christianity.
- When a man shamelessly declares that everything you worked for all your life – and what was left to provide for you and your fatherless children – is now his because it is God’s way of providing for his greed.
- When a man declares that it is his wish to be a millionaire before he dies…and he intends to attain that goal by acquiring a widow’s home and earnings.
- When a man declares that he would rather see your children on the street penniless and leave an inheritance of your money for his children so they can live on easy street.
- When God creates more than one opportunity to make right the wrong that was done to you, but it is rejected – you know then that Greed trumps integrity, honesty, and character.
You may try to make sense of this behavior by professing Christians, but you cannot because it is clearly not Biblical.
However, remember that such behavior is indicative of a poverty mindset, not an abundance mindset. When so much weight is placed on material gain to the detriment of one’s spiritual gain and eternal consequences, what you see is evidence of a poverty of spirit. Place your confidence in your Father who owns the cattle on a thousand hills; the world is His and the fullness thereof. Mark 8:36 speaks to this struggle in a man’s heart, “What does it profit a man to gain the whole world but lose his soul?” NOTHING!!
If you are a victim of narcissistic greed and deception, separate yourself from the works and mindset of a narcissistic abuse. Choose to live under God’s favor instead. Everything that emanates from narcissistic greed is tarnished by deception and evil. It’s a cursed legacy that will always keep you tethered to evil.
Instead, choose to live under the favor of the Lord.
Psalm 84:10 says, “For better is one day in Your courts than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.”
The BEST decision you could have made is to get untethered from this evil, no matter the monetary price you pay. If he leaves you without child support (and he will because he wants to punish you for leaving him and will only provide for his children if they turn against you), if he keeps your home (and he will because he is the quintessential fraud spoken of in 1 Timothy 5:8, “if any man does not provide for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever”), if he steals your divorce settlement meant to give you and your children a fresh start (and he will because that was what he was hoping to acquire from the beginning), if he pretends to love your minor children only to take away any child support that they had coming (and he will because that was part of his wealth accumulation strategy), if you are a widow and he steals your home and life insurance (and he will because that was your most attractive feature – you had the means to help him achieve his dreams), DO NOT WORRY. The scriptures promise that those who devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers will be punished most severely. There is a reason that verse is present in the Bible.
Choose to live your life from an eternal perspective, not from a short-sighted and greedy perspective. You will not want for anything. The Lord will make a way for you to provide for yourself and your children. And His way is an honest way. His way is an abundant way. You may lose confidence in other Christians around you because of what has been done to you by professing Christians. Even that will be redeemed for you. God will surround you with godly men and women who not only choose to do the right thing every day, no matter the cost, but also give abundantly not from their excess but out of a heart of generosity. It has been said “There is no such thing as a Christian scrooge”. God will bring such people in your life who will pour into your life and into the lives of your children, who will exemplify the virtues of Christian charity and not narcissistic greed and selfishness.
I pray that as you heal from the aftermath of the tsunami of narcissistic abuse, your soul may find peace and quiet, you may rest in the confidence and assurance that your God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Embark on the adventure that is true Christian living – love honestly, give generously, and live abundantly under the favor of our Lord and King. And choose this day that you and your household will serve the Lord and not mammon. This is how you pass on a legacy of blessing to your children and grandchildren. This is how their inheritance leads to a life of prosperity and meaning. He will bring to fruition His plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Just keep your heart in right standing with Him.
